NO HOME SICKNESS〔

NO HOME SICKNESS〔

Sixty years ago, or more,
left the island to study ashore.
Twenty five thousand, in this swampy place, resides,
more houses build, more boats, along the river side.
The tides change, the population dwindles,
the young moves out for better living, senior dangle,
a retirement village for five thousand remains,
tourists flock in, bicycles lanes built for concrete gains.
Return home few times without homesickness sentiments,
the river that almost drowned me is gone with vengeance.
My old school is burnt in a fire, opium dens are now banned,
enjoys my occasional puff, the doses too small for dreamland,
watches gambling along streets, delinquency is not in brain,
as development reign, my childhood memories slowly wane.
Without nostalgia, there is no sickness to think of home,
lapse of a decade, I revisit my island, without desire to roam.

No homesickness but nice to know your past origins
Memorys that are just dim recollections of what was once.
Best wishes for the new year mate.
    Regards

Emu, memories are indeed past reminiscence .There are sentiments to look at the road travelled. However, to write or sing in praise of “Home” is a kind of sentimentality we need to ignore. My father had chosen my childhood path, and, in a way, offered me choices of many other paths ahead.

Agree completely with your comment, our past is just a map to look back on, a map that directed us to where we are now and who we are.
        Cheers

Ian, Indeed they are just mapping. What would have happen if I didn’t leave the island, or go to Australia.
There are no answers for such speculations. Whatever the choice, life goes on, in one way or another.
