POEM TRANSLATION: SONNET & HAIKU 159

 

PUSHING AN OLD DEAD CAR

《推一輛老死車》

 

Relaxed and sipped black coffee at the mall;

在商場,輕松地,飲黑咖啡;

My pal called, told about the ringgit fall.

我友來電,訴林吉幣下降。

Hard to refrain from looking at the rate;

難以經常關注兌換比率;

Heart would miss beats, an attack would be fate.

心失跳動,攻擊將成命運。

 

At supermarket, bought myself a bag;

在超市,自買了一個袋子;

And I paid thirty percent on price tag.

在價標上付百分之三十.

The money might dwindle after next week;

下周後,儲款可能减少了;

Helpless, the foreign reserve was too weak.

無奈,外匯儲蓄不牢固的。

 

Frugal or spend, we would soon be bankrupt;

節儉或花費,我們將破產;

It’s hard to prevent theft from the corrupt.

其難以防止腐败的盗窃。

The system was faulty for fifty years;

五十年的系统是錯誤的;

Changing the driver would not change the gear.

更换司機,齒輪不會改變。

 

We need engine overhauled to jump-start;

我們需启動發動機檢修;

Pushing an old dead car was just not smart.

推輛老死的車是不明智。

old smart, young smarting
