POEM TRANSLATION: AGE QUAKE

POEM TRANSLATION: AGE QUAKE

AGE QUAKE: A SONNET

Hidden behind the Botox and face mask;

桿菌毒素隐藏在臉膜後;

A modern taboo, sensitive to ask.

It involves more than figures and numbers;

其涉及多個图像和數字;

A trip ride you forget and remember.

Changes and transformation all the way;

人隨歲月不断變化轉型;

Pray to stay at best, nature cannot sway.

More fear than death, aging is a stigma;

比死更害怕,老化是憾事;

Terror on mirror, trauma is drama.

Age is as old as you are, felt or think;

齡如你同大,感覺或思考;

Peeling vanity, live to shine or sink.

The body does not aged and fall the same;

身體老化樣和下降不同;

Face is young, energy decline, knee lame.

Wig, dentures, hearing aids, and walking frame;

假髮、假牙、助聽器,步行架;

Aging well is living, no shame in game.

    The last line says it all. It’s not easy to age. You have to be strong. People focus on appearance and not on the inner beauty it has taken all this time to build. I hope someday this may change.

      Thank you Claudia for highlighting it. Even physical aging in the same person decline at different rate. My left knee is much younger than my left, not to mention the unseen body system, such as the major organs. There is nothing wrong wanting to be young, but, if we are too influenced by the industry, then the mind becomes juvenile, thou age has cross beyond the wrinkles and furrows. I shall respond to this in a haiku.

        I look forward to it. For me, it’s my eyes that are aging faster than the rest of me, and even between them, the right more than the left. Or maybe it’s a more adventurous life it is having? This is something to think about, as you consider the body as a world.

        The aesthetic industry has picked certain parts of body to advertise. Now we are seeing extension of replacements, in ways we change our automobile spare parts.

        Yes. Some being necessary, such as lenses in the eye after cataract surgery (I am a beneficiary of that one) and others not so necessary. And maybe harmful. It is human to want to improve or to repair, but the idea of what is improved or how it should be fixed, well…that is an open question.

        Indeed so. How to smile and cry without the wrinkles and furrows? I chose dental implants, being a gastronome, but not a Lasix and hearing aid yet, for lots of things are not worthy of seeing or hearing. It’s a matter of prioritizing choices and options.

        That is true. I was sad when I had cataract surgery, which was a result of retina surgery, and both were essential. But, my very near-sighted eyes are now different as a result, and though it has worked out fine and my vision mostly restored, well…still I miss the eyes I had for so long.
