POEM TRANSLATION HAIKU 474 WITH NOTES

JOY OF OUTDOOR

perfume from the dress

gossip choke the smoky room

too digress indoor

drizzle since midnight

fun to stroll and play outdoor

with boots and raincoats

hand-in-hand we laugh

re-live age of innocence

joy of splashing rain

Note:The first haiku reflected lives of aristocrats in Eliot’s time. Times have changed, but not the intrigue and lifestyle of people in power.  The lust of power perfused indoor; sex, money, posts and political divide were the gossips of the ruling class. The smoke of gain choked the room. Addicted by the inhaled power, mindsets and aspirations changed.   Maybe the topics have digressed or the air too nauseating, some dare to venture outdoors for some fresh breath. Or they spent long hours focused on their smart phone, or run out of wired power, they switched off for some outdoor activities, such as protest.

It was drizzling since midnight. The air was cool; the dust and dirt had settled down, with clearer vision outdoors. There were flashbacks of bygone days. Life was much simpler without the distraction of modern social media technology, the miseducation, the angst of housing and living. There were more face to face contacts, more small talks among families, more sit together for meals, more games among friends, across all racial groups, sex and ages. Hand in hand we laugh and play, even in the soaking rain. We lived in that age of innocence, without backstabbing and betrayal. During festive holy days, we visited houses, asking for forgiveness of petty sins, without handouts. That was down memory lanes, but the aspiration remains.
